A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
