Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
