Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
