Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
