The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
